The 10 Construction Trades That Employ the Most People

July 4, 2024

Skilled tradespeople are in high demand. And, if you’re considering going to trade school to take advantage of recent trends we’re seeing in our economy…

You’re in luck!

Because not only could you be in high demand once you graduate, but the need for your services isn’t likely to go anywhere any time soon. Afterall, artificial intelligence may be taking a lot of desk jobs away from people, but it can’t construct buildings or fix pipes, or wire houses.

But you can!

Today, School Match Pro, a nationwide leader in matching people with a trade school or career-college that fits their needs, will show you the top 10 construction trades that employ the most people…

And we’ll show how we can match you with a trade school near you (or even one online, yes, online!)

But before we match you with a trade or career-based school, let’s have a look at the 10 construction trades that employ the most people.

We’re going to show you the name of the trade, how many annual job openings there are in that trade, and the median salary of each trade.

Ready?

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, they are…[1]

  • Drywall and ceiling tile installers: There’s an expected 7,900 new job openings every year, and the job pays a median salary of $55,700 a year.

  • Sheet metal workers: The economy needs 11,400 new sheet metal workers every year, and the job pays a median of $58,780 a year.

  • Roofers: There’s a lot of growth opportunity in this trade with the need for 12,200 new roofers every year. And it pays pretty good too at $50,030 a year.

  • Cement masons and concrete finishers: At $50,720 a year, the economy may see about 14,200 mason job openings annually.

  • Painters, construction, and maintenance: Good salary, great growth! We’ll see 29,300 skilled painter job openings every year with a median pay of $47,700.

  • Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters: There’s massive demand for plumbers. Our economy could see 42,600 job openings a year, and the job pays a median of $61,550.

  • Operating engineers and other construction equipment operators: Another high demand job (38,200 job openings a year), these pros make a median of $56,160 a year.

  • Carpenters: Skilled carpenters are needed and needed badly. The estimates show that 79,500 new job openings happen annually, with a median salary of $56,350 a year.

  • Electricians: A median salary of $61,590 a year is very good. And it’s expected that we’ll see 73,500 job openings for electricians every year.

  • Construction laborers: The most in demand trade, by far. There’s likely to be over 129,000 job openings annually, with a median pay of $45,300.

Now, if any of these trades interest you, now may be a great time to get certified for the job…

Meaning now’s the time to go to trade school, because even though many of the salaries associated with the trades are already good, chances are they could get even better!
